Paris Masters, No. 1 Popular Men’s Professional Tennis in Europe

Introduction

Paris Masters is one of Paris, France’s most famous annual men’s professional tennis tournaments. This indoor competition unfolds at the AccorHotels Arena in the vibrant Bercy neighborhood. It is a Masters 1000 event on the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Tour.

The origins of this tournament can be traced back to the French Covered Court Championships. It was hosted at the Stade Pierre de Coubertin during the open era until 1982. In 1989, it was elevated to the status of one of the Grand Prix Tour’s Grand Prix Super Series events.

Typically, this tournament serves as the final competition on the ATP Tour just before the season-ending ATP Finals. Over the years, it has been officially known as the BNP Paribas Masters from 2003 to 2016 and the Rolex Paris Masters from 2017.

Before introducing the Tennis Masters Series, replacing the ATP Super 9 in 2000, the tournament was recognized as the Paris Open. The Paris Indoor event is often called because the other major tennis event in Paris, the French Open, is played outdoors.

Additionally, since 2009, it has been the only Masters 1000 tournament conducted indoors. Between 1970 and 1986, there were typically three indoor events among the top nine tournaments (then known as the Grand Prix Championship Series), and from 1978 to 1980, there were four indoor events alongside the year-end Championships.

Between 1987 and 2008, two indoor tournaments were part of the Masters level. The playing surface was historically one of the fastest courts in the world, favoring bold and aggressive tennis.

However, since 2011, it has undergone a general slowing down, consistent with the broader trend of courts on the tour.

Only a few players have won in the Paris Masters (Bercy) and the French Open. These exceptional players include Ilie Năstase, Andre Agassi, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic.

Djokovic secured wins at Bercy in 2009, 2013–15, 2019, 2021, and the French Open in 2016, 2021, and 2023, while Federer claimed the French Open in 2009 and Bercy in 2011.

Andre Agassi’s victories came in 1994 (Bercy) and 1999 (both tournaments), as did Ilie Năstase’s in 1973. In 2015, Marcelo Melo and Ivan Dodig won the doubles events at both tournaments.

To date, Novak Djokovic is the sole player who has successfully defended his title in Paris, achieving this feat in 2013–15.
